CAS News Letter

The newsletter for this week was written by undergraduate Art Education majors May Ly and Sarah Green.

Hello CAS Parents and Caregivers!

Before telling you about the exciting things that happened in the session this week, we do want to let you know that we are still going to have a CAS session on April 4.

We decided that we are going to be at the Athenaeum for class no matter what, so if your family is in town for spring break, students are welcome to come! We have a few fun, exciting projects planned for anyone who attends. If you are traveling, safe travels and we will see you the following week! This week, the students learned about the process of reflecting, documenting artwork, and self-representation through art. The purpose of having the students reflect on their artwork was to help them determine which works were most important to them. This process allowed them to make sense of the materials and experiences for themselves and for potential viewers of their artworks. It also helped them to create and shape their experience to help them develop their confidence, art practice, identity, and much more; but most importantly it allowed them to see their progress and understand their thinking.

We asked the students to reflect over the scope of CAS by looking over all of the artwork they have completed thus far. We then asked them to choose three of their projects to focus on to display for a final exhibition. They were very excited for this week to have some studio time to work on their unfinished projects. We were thrilled to see how much passion, dedication, and hard work they have put into each one of their projects! There is never enough time during the studio session as some of them worked up until the very last minute.

While students were working on their projects, our student teachers took pictures of their in-progress artwork to display on a documentation board. Three note cards were given to each student to reflect why they enjoyed making each of the three artworks they chose. For example, what do they want viewers of their work to know or learn more about? How do their messages reflect their beliefs, and identity? And lastly, we had students revisit vanessa german’s question: If you could make a piece of art that had the power to do ANYTHING, what would it do? Their reflections were taped on the documentation board next to a photo of their work in progress or finished project.Looking forward, there are three more sessions of CAS. With that being said, students will be working on finishing their final projects and integrating new techniques from mini-lessons that will be introduced in our upcoming session. We cannot wait to see the outcome of their artworks!

Sincerely,

Sarah and May
